There are two villages called Mengsong in Xishuangbanna, in southern Yunnan. This tea comes from Xiao Mengsong ("Little Mengsong"), a small, isolated plateau at around 1,600 meters on the border with Myanmar. The Akha people have lived on the plateau in relative isolation for centuries and gradually planted gardens of tea trees there.
This maocha comes from the oldest section of a family garden, planted by the family's ancestors. The garden is tended without chemicals, the trees are pruned sparingly, and the weeding is done by hand without turning the soil.
If you're a fan of young sheng, this is a shoo-in: plush, powdery soft, with yellow fruit aromatics. The mouthfeel spreads effortlessly across the mouth, and the finish is soft and lingering yet not insubstantial. In later steeps a slight savory quality turns up, along with a hint of sticky rice. Lovely and clean.
Spring 2026 harvest. Maocha is loose leaf raw puerh that hasn't been pressed into a cake.
