Ippodo has sold tea in Kyoto since 1717, when Rihei Watanabe opened a shop near the Imperial Palace selling tea and ceramics. In 1846 Prince Yamashina gave the shop the name Ippodo, which means "preserve one," with the wish that it keep to one tradition: good tea.
After a fire in 1864, the shop was rebuilt on the spot where it stands today. Kaboku, the tearoom inside, opened in 1995, and Ippodo now has shops in Tokyo and New York as well.
