Yamamasa Koyamaen is a family tea company in Ogura, Uji, founded in 1861. They're known for careful attention at every step, from choosing the leaf to processing and stone milling. Masajiro Koyama, a former president of the company, helped develop the Samidori cultivar in Ogura.
Their matcha has a fragrant, lightly nutty aroma with the deep umami Uji is known for. Matsukaze is the easy place to start as usucha, and the range climbs through Samidori, Yomo no Kaori and Ogurayama to Shikibu no Mukashi. Matsukaze and Samidori also work well in a latte.
