Nakayama Kukicha Japanese Green Tea
Nakayama Kukicha, made by the Nakayama family in Higashi Sonogi, is an easy to drink, refreshing low-caffeine green tea. This kukicha, or shiraore , has a distinctive citrus note with a clean vegetal sweetness. It's excellent both chilled and hot and makes an easy, fuss-free healthy beverage throughout the day.
The Nakayama family has operated their tea facility for over 70 years in the rural village of Nakao (Nagasaki Prefecture), where tea cultivation dates back five centuries. Located at 250 meters elevation on volcanic soils, this region has deep historical ties to tea production that were formalized during the Edo period. Nakayama Hisatsugu leads the family operation with a focus on environmentally sustainable practices and community engagement through their eco-tourism homestay program.
