Huang Zhi Xiang, meaning "Yellow Sprig" or "Gardenia Fragrance," is one of the historic Phoenix Mountain varietals with roots going back over 600 years. The liquor is easy going and approachable, with a mouthwatering sweetness and a fruitiness reminiscent of apricot or peach jam with floral gardenia notes. This light to medium-roasted tea has no excessive astringency and brews a peachy honey-colored cup that's quite pleasant to drink both Western and gong fu style.
The original mother bush for this cultivar is considered the oldest known tea plant in the Phoenix Mountain region. "Dancong" literally means "single bush," referring to the traditional practice of picking and processing tea from individual bushes to preserve their unique characteristics. Like all dancong oolongs, its unique fragrance is naturally occurring and coaxed out with skillful tea processing.
