Horii Shichimeien Uji-chashi Hojicha

Uji-chashi Hojicha is cozy yet still very intriguing. Sweetness and roast come together in a very clean, well put together cup, and the roast is perfectly balanced. It brews a golden, honey-colored liquor from a light-toned mix of leaf and stem. We highly recommend it.

Horii Shichimeien describes this hojicha by its strong roasted aroma and its mellow, clean flavor. The name means "Uji tea master." In the Edo period, Uji's tea masters held the right to supply tea to the shogun, and each year their tea traveled to Edo in a grand procession of tea jars.

Horii Shichimeien has sold tea in Uji since 1879 and still tends Okunoyama, the last surviving garden of the Uji Shichimeien, the seven celebrated tea gardens of the Muromachi period.
