This compact handleless teapot from Tokoname holds 200ml, a comfortable one to two serving size. With no side handle, it is held directly in the palm when pouring, and the symmetrical form pours equally well from either hand.
It is made from iron-rich red clay sourced from the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, the same clay that has defined Tokoname ware since the late Heian period. Tokoname is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, and this distinctive red clay remains its most recognizable material. Because this pot is unglazed, the clay makes direct contact with the tea as it brews. The porous surface is thought to soften bitterness and round out the flavor of green tea over time. This pot is best suited to Japanese green teas such as sencha, gyokuro, or tamaryokucha. Avoid brewing flavored, blended, or strongly aromatic teas, as the unglazed clay will absorb those flavors and carry them into future sessions. The body is decorated with a pressed sakura motif that adds delicate texture to the warm vermilion surface.
The ceramic filter on this pot is mounted to the underside of the lid rather than at the spout. This placement allows the pot to be inverted almost completely when pouring, helping drain every last drop of liquor cleanly from the leaves and keeping steeping time precise across multiple infusions. The ceramic filter adds no metallic taste to the tea. The wide, open body makes emptying spent leaves and rinsing straightforward.
Care
Before first use, rinse with hot water at 60–80°C and allow to soak for 30 minutes, then empty and dry thoroughly. For regular cleaning, rinse with plain water only. No soap or detergent. After rinsing, remove the lid and store both pieces upright to allow airflow through the filter. Make sure the pot is completely dry before storing. Use this pot for one style of tea, as the unglazed clay will absorb and retain flavors over time.
