Ryo Tokoname Kyusu from Saliu (~330ml)

This handmade Tokoname unglazed kyusu is an original design from Saliu, a tableware brand based in Gifu Prefecture. Made from iron-rich shudei clay, the pot undergoes carbonized firing, a high-temperature reduction process where restricted oxygen transforms the natural red clay into deep black. The iron content in the clay is said to interact with tannins in tea, softening bitterness and creating a mellower taste.

The Ryo series is produced at the Gyokko (Tamamitsu Touen) workshop in Tokoname, founded by Harutaka Umehara in 1945. His son Hirotaka Umehara took over in 1988, inheriting the second-generation Tamamitsu title, a hereditary name meaning "jewel light" (玉光). Hirotaka is certified as a Traditional Craftsman by Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. The workshop team creates handmade Tokoname kyusu using traditional methods.

The side handle gives you control when pouring, and the built-in ceramic mesh filter catches leaf particles while allowing tea leaves to fully expand. At 330ml capacity, this pot is sized for multiple infusions.

Before first use, soak the kyusu in warm water (60-80°C) for 30-60 minutes. After each use, rinse with hot water and let it dry completely with the lid off. Don't use soap or detergent, as the clay can absorb these and affect your tea's flavor.
