Kashiwayo Mesh Strainer Tokoname Kyusu (260ml)

This kyusu features black Tokoname clay with crisp white and blue horizontal stripes. Produced by Kashiwayo workshop in Tokoname, the pot uses a belt mesh filter that handles fine-leaved teas particularly well, making it ideal for fukamushicha (deep-steamed sencha).

The body is made from kokurodei, Tokoname's iron-rich black clay sourced from ancient lake sediments in the Chita Peninsula. The high iron content gives the clay its dark color and affects the flavor profile of tea brewed in it—the unglazed interior is said to mellow the taste through subtle mineral interactions. The white and blue bands are applied as decorative glazed stripes that contrast cleanly against the matte black surface.

The obi-ami, or belt mesh filter, is a band-style stainless steel strainer with ultra-fine mesh. This filter type is favored for fukamushicha, a sencha variety that undergoes extended steaming compared to regular sencha. The longer steaming process makes the leaves extremely soft and creates many fine particles. The belt mesh's fine gauge catches these particles effectively while maintaining a fast, smooth pour with minimal risk of clogging. It also works well with regular sencha, gyokuro, and kabusecha.

Before first use, fill the kyusu with warm water (60-80°C) and let it sit for 30-60 minutes. Empty and rinse. For regular cleaning, rinse with warm water only—no detergent. The stainless steel belt mesh filter can be gently cleaned with a soft brush if needed. After washing, empty any water from the spout and body, then leave the lid off to dry completely before storing. Tokoname pottery is less porous than Yixing clay and does not require extensive seasoning.
