A hohin is a handleless Japanese teapot made specifically for brewing premium green teas like gyokuro, kabusecha, and high-grade sencha. Unlike the kyusu, the everyday side-handled teapot, the hohin is designed for delicate, temperature-sensitive teas. You hold the body directly while pouring, which lets you feel the water temperature and naturally guides you to use cooler water that won't burn your hands or scorch the tea. The wide, low shape gives leaves room to expand fully and helps water cool to the right temperature.
Functional Details
This hohin is made from white porcelain with a smooth, non-porous surface that won't absorb tea flavors, so you can use it for any type of tea without worrying about flavor carryover between sessions.
The hohin holds 160ml (about 5.4 oz), enough for two small cups of tea. The spout has engraved ridges that strain most tea leaves. While this works well for most teas, it's worth noting that very fine particles from teas may pass through, which is actually traditional and adds body to the tea. The teapot is dishwasher-safe, though hand washing is recommended.
Maker: Miyama
Miyama Co. Ltd. was founded in 1977 in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, as part of the region's 1,300-year Mino ware tradition. The company has received the Good Design Award five times. This hohin belongs to Miyama's Chahaku series, developed with a local tea merchant to make brewing high-quality Japanese tea both careful and convenient.
Care Instructions
Rinse with warm water before first use. After brewing, empty the leaves and rinse thoroughly with warm water. No soap needed. Let the teapot air dry completely with the lid off or slightly open. Avoid extreme temperature changes.
