This handcrafted matcha bowl from Ishido Togei's workshop features the kohiki technique, a traditional slipware style introduced by Korean potters in the late 15th century. Iron-rich clay is coated with white slip, then finished with a translucent glaze, creating the bowl's characteristic soft, powdery appearance and warm, organic feel.
Made in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, this bowl showcases the region's renowned iron-rich clay sourced from ancient sediments of Lake Tokai. Tokoname is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, with a pottery tradition dating back to the late Heian period (around 1100). As the largest of these historic production areas, Tokoname influenced pottery styles throughout Japan.
Ishido Togei's workshop honors traditional Tokoname techniques while pursuing innovative forms. The kohiki technique creates a glaze that is not a perfect seal, so this bowl is made to be aged. Liquid seeps into the base clay and dries slowly, creating stains that make each bowl develop its own character over time.
Dimensions: Approximately 12cm diameter × 7cm height
Care: Hand wash recommended; not suitable for microwave or dishwasher
Made in Japan
