Benifûki Japanese Black Tea from Kumaen

Yamecha Kumaen in Joyomachi, Yame is well-known for their award-winning traditional gyokuro (and we often carry a couple of their exceptional senchas), but their black tea production deserves equal attention. This second flush Benifuki showcases smooth, rich maltiness balanced by buttery sweetness and notes of ripe fruit. The aromatics are truly intoxicating, with almond and pastry notes that linger and invite you back for another cup.

The Benifûki cultivar itself has fascinating lineage: a cross between Benihomare (a Japanese tea plant grown from Assamese tea bushes brought to Japan in the late 19th century) and tea plants from Darjeeling. Originally developed specifically for black tea production, this heritage shines through in the tea's complexity and depth, offering a beautiful bridge between Japanese terroir and the bold character typically associated with Assam teas.
